Determined

This letter, or something very like it, appeared at least in the Daily Mail last week:

Dear Sir,

The latest in the MPs’ expenses saga only adds insult to the injury, here in North-West Durham, of the anti-democratic chaos in the selection of a candidate by the traditionally dominant, but now effectively collapsed, local Labour Party. However, there is an alternative. As has long been my intention, I will be standing as an Independent.

I have an absolute commitment to the monarchy, the organic Constitution, national sovereignty, the Union, the Commonwealth, the countryside, grammar schools, traditional moral and social values, controlled importation and immigration, and a realistic foreign policy. And I have a no less absolute commitment to the Welfare State, workers’ rights, consumer protection, strong communities, conservation (not environmentalism), fair taxation, full employment, proper local government, a powerful Parliament, and a base of real property from which every household can resist both over-mighty commercial interests and an over-mighty State.

Powerful Labour or ex-Labour stalwarts in these parts say almost publicly that this is now a five-way marginal involving Labour, the Liberal Democrats (who are hardly going to campaign), the Tories (who are not going to campaign at all), the BNP, and me. I only need to be the first past the post. I intend to be. I can be contacted on davidaslindsay@hotmail.com; and are there any more of us out there, determined to restore real voter choice on the basis of One Nation politics, with an equal emphasis on the One and on the Nation?

Yours faithfully,

David Lindsay
