No Comic Relief Here

No enforced jollity for enforced abortion. Overtly in China, among other places. Semi-overtly, and on racist and eugenic (including class) grounds, among terrified teenagers in Britain, victims of Sex Education.

But is it in this cause that the painfully unfunny remake of Carry On Up The Khyber is to be joined by a painfully unfunny remake of Carry On Follow That Camel? I'm not laughing. Nor should you be.

  1. The Now Show will be bad enough tonight, if it is allowed on. But Comic Relief on the night that we embark on another war? Couldn't they just show the EastEnders planned for Monday, followed by an old episode of New Tricks?

  2. Comic Relief - Yes Please18 March 2011 at 16:18

The title 'Comic Relief' has always puzzled me. Pain relief means we are free from pain. Tax relief means freedom from paying tax, or at a reduced rate. One could go on. So why can we not have some relief from these unfunny, often foul-mouthed, so-called comedians who leap on to our screens every year and virtually demand that we follow their lead and support 'their' chosen pet projects? And then they go on expensive junkets to Africa and other places (where there is great need, I grant you) to further showcase their caring side. I would willingly and generously support comic relief if it meant that these 'cutting edge' comedians were removed permanently from our screens (what they do and say in theatres is up to them and the goons who pay to watch them). I can think of one Boyle that should be lanced immediately.

  3. I shall be taking the opportunity presented by the almost total lack of decent telly tonight, and catching up on my Lenten reading.
