Would John Redwood care to cite a specific case of anyone's being told in 1975 that we were voting on "a free trade area"? By Ted Heath, perhaps? Or by Roy Jenkins? Or, to give her her due, by Margaret Thatcher? (If he can find anything that the Prime Minister of the day, Harold Wilson, ever said either way, then he will be doing well.)
Whereas there were numerous explanations of the true character of the project by Enoch Powell, Douglas Jay, Tony Benn, Michael Foot, Barbara Castle, Judith Hart and the same Peter Shore who not only opposed Maastricht when Redwood now pretends that he was doing so, but also opposed the scrapping of the Royal Yacht when Redwood later pretended that he had done so.
