God Bless Hans Blix

He is particularly dear to my heart because, many moons ago, he spoke at Edinburgh on the same evening as Durham had Simon Mollon for the third time that term. But that will mean nothing to most of you.

Blix correctly pointed out that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Not that they would have been any threat to Britain if there had been, which was the only question that ought to have concerned us in the slightest.

Now, he correctly points out that there is no nuclear weapons programme in Iran. Not that it would have been any threat to Britain if there were, which is the only question that ought to concern us in the slightest.

Much as I loathe nuclear weapons, I do wonder why Iran does not want them. She is the victim of the world's only outstanding and operative nuclear threat by any nuclear state against any non-nuclear state.

  1. Molly is now Head of Peace Studies at a church college, even if it is a C of E one.

  2. Oh, I don't deny an affection for the old dear. And I am very glad that he has moved so far in his views. Then again, he always was something of a paleocon at heart.

  3. Are you not just upset that they never asked you?

  4. Why the anger? Its not like Moll is hardly one of the public school rich kids like Jon who you regularly decry? I remember he spoke a lot too

  5. We all remember you Mr L. Sat in your customary place at the end of one of the bench behind the opp speakers, dressed in your finery, you would regularly regale us with a fine floor speech that wiped the floor with whatever two bit speaker had been brought up from London that night.

A shame they never made more of your talents.

  6. Anonymous, from time to time, they did.

Robbir, on the contrary, I have nothing but veneration for so venerable an institution. Durham has never been short of either character or characters, and that is why, one way or another, I have never quite left, nor ever quite will.

Peter d, you are very kind. And, again, from time to time, they did.
