Rowan Williams And His Critics

Total Trinitarian and Chalcedonian orthodoxy, issuing, as that does, in a holding of the line on pro-life (all the way back to the 1960s, unlike Michael Ramsey), on the traditional definition of marriage, on social justice, and against unjust wars. So, not a Thatcherite neocon, which is the very antithesis of "old-fashioned Christian principles" as surely as more conventional Marxism was. Probably too academic for the job, and definitely too nice. But just wait for Sentamu, who has exactly the same principles, and quite right, too.

The Church of England and the Conservative Party stood for the same thing in the 1950s. The Church of England, the coming John Sentamu as much as Rowan Williams, still does, and really could not not. But now, that position is screamed down as "Marxism" and what have you by people who are themselves the true dialectical materialists and class warriors, only in the bourgeois rather than the proletarian interest. The same is true in relation to the Eisenhower Republican who is currently the President of the United States. There are many other such examples besides.

How long before the New Right is forced to disassociate itself completely from orthodox Christianity?

In the United States, the attempt to identify Christianity with the New Right agenda (which means allying Christianity to Hard Zionism, Objectivism and liberal Trotskyism) for political reasons has caused some young people to reject the faith.

It is unfortunate and many clergymen are beginning to see how the fusionist alliance has hurt American Christianity.

I hope things are better in the United Kingdom.
