I hope
that everyone understands what the people on the streets of Timbuktu shouting
"Vive la France!" mean by it.
When we
went into Sierra Leone, the cheering crowds on the streets of Freetown, part of
which is still called New England while another part is still called
Wellington, wanted us to take their country back under British sovereignty.
And we
really were going back into Africa as a military power. It was not as if, like
the French, we had never really left.
