    As the Yes camp takes the lead in the polls and even Owen Jones admits the Union is finished whatever the outcome of this referendum, there's no point crying about it.

    You people who voted Labour in 1997 (whose constitutionally revolutionary manifesto pledged devolution and abolition of the only independent voices in the House of Lords) voted for the breakup of Britain.

    Indeed, John Redwood warned at the time that Labour's devolution would "break the backbone of Britain".

    So let's not hear any complaints about the Union from those who voted for the party of constitutional revolution, "Regional Assemblies", "Lords reform"Continental Human Rights and devolution.

    You get what you pay for.

      No one else bothered to contest any of Blair's three General Elections, so he won them by default.

      In 1997, the Conservatives actively wanted to lose. So they did.

      Even in 2001 and 2005, they didn't really want to win. So they didn't.

    Labour's devlution didn't cause the problem. It was a consequence. An attempt to prevent us getting where we are now. The problem is that one of the two main governing parties has rejected the north of england and scotland and has no representation there. Periodically, we have a government which acts like a colonial master rather than a national government with roots in the whole country. Why are we going to lose our country? It's the conservatives, stupid. This wouldn't have happened under a laour government.

    Peter Hitchens was very much alive in. 1997-and he didn't vote for that lot and warned people what New Labour would be like (remember that terrifying line in the 97 manifesto that called Labour " the political arm of the British people" like we were living in a third world One a Party State?) As did Simon Heffer and many others.

    Peter predicted in the Express that the Labour plan was to turn the Houses of Commons and the Lords and the judiciary into a "House of Tony's Cronies".

    That was the purpose of devolution, Lords reform, Human Rights (empowering people like Cherie Blair) Alistair Campbell's unelected power, the weakening of Parliament, Blair's Presidential style and all the rest.

    As Peter Hitchens said when Princess Diana died, Labour acted as if the Armed Forces and police and the fealty of the people belonged to them.

    It was the precursor for what was to come.

      He certainly didn't want the other side to win. People who are not certain public personae do not get to be as self-indulgent as those who are.
