"Take My Mother-in-Law"

That may as well be the opening line of the hysterics who now see even UKIP questioning the fact that the French, German and other States can not only run railways but also own ours, yet the British State is apparently incapable of doing so, despite overwhelming public support across all party allegiances.

They are repeating the stand-up comedy about British Rail, a routine that was tired and unfunny even at the time, yet on which John Major preposterously based an entire policy, with utterly catastrophic consequences.

There is talk of renationalisation by a Labour-SNP Coalition. However, the only absolute guarantee would be a Labour overall majority.

The renationalisation of the railways at United Kingdom level would not only be a magnificent reassertion of national and parliamentary sovereignty.

But it would also be the most Unionist act since the great nationalisations of the 1940s, not least because it would make Scottish independence logistically impossible.
