If the BBC were to depict Muhammad, then it would be kicked out of scores of countries. Thus, it would be unable to be the BBC.
This makes perfect editorial sense. There is no case for changing it because certain "free speech" fanatics wish to dictate what we all have to say.
The right to depict Muhammad is the right not to depict Muhammad, if that is your preference or your judgement.
Quite correctly, that is at least the BBC's judgement. To which it is entitled.
