The EVEL Century

Of the 1992 SNP slogan "Free In '93", Donald Dewar said that it was "reusable". Every hundred years.

One Bill per decade, usually a very small one, is "English-only"; nothing relating to health or education is, for example, since it simply does not work like that.

In 90 per cent of those cases, the result would be the same without the MPs from Scotland. It has always been arithmetically impossible to win an overall majority without one in England, which all majority Labour Governments have therefore enjoyed.

So EVEL would make any difference once every hundred years, and even then almost certainly on an issue of barely any consequence.

The provision may as well be put in place, if that would shut certain people up. It would make absolutely no practical difference.
