Transitional Truth

The "transitional period" means the period, of 10 years or thereabouts, between pretending to leave the EU and officially re-joining it.

But re-joining on whatever terms the EU chose to set, since we had made such a nuisance of ourselves.

This is precisely the intention of Theresa May, who was a Yes voter in 1975 and a Conservative voter in 1983, in contrast to Jeremy Corbyn on both counts.

If the EU had been any kind of bulwark against Thatcherism and all that followed, then I might have been a bit more sympathetic to it.

But nothing could have been further from the case.

And if the EU had given this country's politics even a whiff of the intellectual and cultural life of the Continent, then I might have been a bit more sympathetic to it.

But it was while we were in it that Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair became Prime Minister.

It was while we were in it that, on one occasion, the two realistic candidates for Prime Minister were those heaviest of intellectual heavyweights, those twin scalers of the dizzying cultural heights, Margaret Thatcher and Neil Kinnock.
